I am interested in movement:
the space it designs and
the space in which it takes place;
the time in which it evolves and
the time that drives it,
I am interested in where the movement will lead,
what lies hidden in it and
what it leaves behind.
Christine Brunel
Christine Brunel has made the city of Essen/Germany the centre of her life and work since 1985. After having studied dance at the Schola Cantorum in Paris/France and the Folkwang School of the Arts in Essen she worked as a dancer in Ulm/Germany, Brussels/Belgium and Paris before returning to Essen and joining the Folkwang Dance Studio
In 1985 she founded her company where numerous choreographies were created which earned her recognition far beyond the city of Essen. She has worked and continues to work as a dancer, choreographer and teacher in, among other places, the United States, Japan, Brasil, Columbia, Mexico, Russia, Poland and France.
In her choreographies, Christine Brunel relies on the small format: the majority of her oeuvre consists of solos, duos through to quintets. They are like miniatures characterized by introspection and concentration. Christine Brunel’s works are marked by her associative use of well-considered signs which she employs in a calculated and sparing manner. Clarity and a reduction to essentials characterize her body language. The body as an instrument, movement as a kind of music dependent on time and space – these are the intrinsic features of her dancing.
Dance,
an infinite energy, bound to time and space,
communicates a piece of life.
